What's Up With My Adrenals?

avocado

You may have heard by now – apparently, our adrenals are shot! At least for a small majority of us. When I first heard about Adrenal Fatigue, I literally let it go in one ear and out the other. I just didn’t need to know about one-more-thing plaguing our generation! But, I couldn’t run from it. Every time I logged onto the internet I was faced with link after link wanting to espouse to me just exactly what was wrong with my adrenals.

Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me so I clicked on one of many of these such links. I knew nothing about Adrenal Fatigue but I wanted to at least figure out what exactly an adrenal was! Here is what I have discovered…

Our adrenal glands are tiny little organs that assist in much of our body’s healthy functioning. When they function well, our body functions well. When our adrenals are stressed and overworked, our bodies are stressed and overworked. Aviva Romm, M.D., one of my favorite pioneers in women’s health, can explain it better than I could. Check out her 10 Signs That Your Adrenals Are On Overdrive!

So, you decide that your adrenals may be stressed, you are feeling the stress, now what?

That is one of the many topics we address here at LaVida Baby! Discover Health. Journey Together. Reclaiming a vibrant life!

I’ve been learning more and more about Adrenal Fatigue over the past year and although I was already eating a pretty clean diet, I have made some big changes.

For one, I have learned that I need to relax. Not just sit-and-kick-your-feet-up relax, but a more purposeful way of processing life. For me, singing at the top of my lungs burns off stress! Spontaneous dance parties in the kitchen with my kids can turn a stressed-out day into a barrel of laughs. A quiet walk, a soak in the tub, a glass of wine – all help to calm my stresses. I am particularly fond of Wholy Fit, a Christian blend of yoga and pilates that centers on Scripture, prayer, and worship. Each of us have our own methods of processing stress. Discover what works for you and embrace it, practice it, and make it a part of your daily routine!

The same sentiment from Chris Wark, hit home when he said, “Food either promotes health or it promotes illness”. If we think about our bodies from creation, before the creation of “junk” food and the new “franken-foods” of today – every single bite we took brought in the amount of nutrients our bodies needed to thrive. And the more I pondered that thought the more I came to imagine that every bite we take that does not bring in nutrients is literally robbing our bodies of that “dose” it needs to maintain ultimate health. It really puts a damper on eating if you think too much about it. I did take this opportunity, though, to be more thoughtful with what I do put in my mouth. Eating a clean-er diet over the past few years has shown me that my body feels good when I feed it well and it feels like junk when I feed it junk. And, knowing that we only live once, I want to feel good. I want to thrive. I want to reclaim my health and live a vibrant life! So, I eat better – here are some changes I have made:

ü  I stopped buying foods in packages and cans! (Exception: bagged salads, %20%20%20%20%20">Bob’s Red Mill GF Steel-cut Oats, and the very occasional gluten-free pasta)

ü  I stopped eating fast food! (Exception: The very occasional stop at Chick-Fil-A)

ü  I stopped eating modern-day wheat! I did switch to %20%20%20%20%20">Einkorn flour (An ancient grain, but we only eat it 1-2 times a week)

ü  I stopped buying conventional milk. I switched us to raw goat milk which is only available to us seasonally.

ü  I ditched the microwave 10 years ago! (We did use a small %20%20%20%20%20">convection toaster oven to reheat foods for a while)

ü  I only use non-chemical cleaning agents in our home. (*Future Blog Post Coming*)

ü  I buy almost-only organic! (Yes, it kills my budget-but, back to that “food is thy medicine” idea!)

ü  I do not sure plastics or foil in my kitchen. (Not hard once you stock up on glass jars and storage containers!)

Making these changes can be overwhelming and actually create stress – the very stress we need to be avoiding if we want to heal our adrenals! So, take a deep breath. Take it a week at a time. Choose one thing you can do this week that will better promote health in your life. Just one! Toss the saran wrap and pick up some glass pyrex bowls to replace it. Buy a bag of dried beans so that when you use up the last of your canned beans, you won’t have to buy canned the next time. When is trash day? Go toss your microwave into your outside trashcan right before your trash man is due to arrive – so you can’t chicken out and grab it up out of the trash before he gets there!! Just pick one thing to change this week, then add another one next week.
